In 2012, Richard Wright saw an opportunity to take advantage of a couple of trends: the continued growth of bottled water and a rising interest in Himalayan Pink Rock Salt. Putting two and two together, he co-founded The Alkaline Water Company (NASDAQ: WTER), and began selling Alkaline88, water enhanced with Himalayan Pink Rock Salt, with a 8.8-pH balance.

About the Event:

Even with a myriad of other options on the shelf, bottled water is the leading beverage sold in supermarkets and convenience stores with sales of over $17 billion last year. According to leading market research firm, IRI, water sales are expected to grow to over $22 billion by 2022. Enhanced water – with vitamins, minerals, or other functional ingredients – is the fastest growing segment of the water market making up more than a quarter of category sales.

Alkaline88 is made using a state-of-the-art, proprietary electrolysis beverage process that enhances its product with trace minerals and electrolytes and produces water high in alkalinity. The company works with a network of co-packers throughout the United States for economical national distribution. They install their equipment at each location and infuse purified water with their proprietary ingredients. There are no chemicals used in the process. The result is a high alkaline water with superior taste.

Alkaline88 is distributed nationally and available in over 50,000 retail locations. They have grown focusing mainly on 3-liter and 1-gallon bulk packaging. In March and April of 2020, sales totaled $13.1M representing year over year increases of 114% and 171% thanks to their efficient supply chain and key vendor status which allowed The Alkaline Water Company to deliver when others couldn’t.

While bulk packaged products make up the majority of the company’s sales and has helped the Alkaline88 become the #10 ranked bottled water brand in the U.S., innovation is an important part of the Alkaline88 story. Product expansion includes smaller, more convenient BPA-free PET #1 recyclable plastic bottles, and eco-friendly aluminum bottles for distribution in C-store, hospitality, drug, specialty retail and other channels.
